STARTED Project, Jan 2018 – 2022

STARTED was a €1m European project successfully completed in 2022. The mission was to teach more researchers how to create companies. This project established the groundwork for a European Research-to-Startup Centre (ERSC) supported by a shared web platform which can centralise ad hoc learning and training contents to create and help future entrepreneurs/intrapreneurs. My role was project lead with the coordinator partner (NUIG) for the entire project; owning and delivering work package one - project management.

Programme: Erasmus+ Key Action: Cooperation for innovation and the exchange of good practices

Action Type: Knowledge Alliances for higher education

Real Value, Jun 2015 -May 2018

RealValue was a €15.5m European energy storage project funded by Horizon 2020, the largest Research and Innovation Programme in Europe. RealValue used a combination of physical demonstrations in Ireland, Germany and Latvia along with innovative modelling techniques, in order to demonstrate how local small-scale energy storage, optimised across the whole EU energy system, with advanced ICT, could bring benefits to all market participants. My role with partner Intel Labs Europe was communication design - ensuring the core concepts of the project was understood across the partners and creating designs that communicated the value of the project output to other stakeholders.

Program: Horizon2020 (Project Reference: 646116, Topic: LCE-08-2014, Call for Proposals: H2020-LCE-2014-3)

Total Cost: €15,413,331 (EU contribution € 11,987,429,73)

EU Funding Goals

2-Year Goals

We aim to build strong relationships with European partners in the fields of climate storytelling and sustainable design. Our focus is on learning from peers, participating as a project partner, and gaining practical experience with EU funding processes. We are particularly interested developing a Global Indications platform for EU made craft goods by partnering with a diverse consortium of European craft clusters and training centres.

5-Year Goals

By year five, we plan to co-design and coordinate our own mid-scale EU-funded projects across our key verticals: climate action, sustainable design and provenance platform. We want to develop our internal capacity in project management, cross-border collaboration and impact evaluation. Our goal is to deliver measurable outputs - such as toolkits, exhibitions, and community engagement models - that can be replicated across Europe.

10-Year Goals

In the long term, Déanta Studio aspires to become a leading coordinator of multi-partner European projects that drive systemic change through arts and culture. We aim to lead large-scale initiatives that influence policy, education, and public discourse on climate through cultural innovation. We will also support emerging organisations by sharing knowledge, mentoring, and hosting collaborative labs across Europe. We aim to have in-house research capacity by then.

Strengths

Déanta Studio brings deep expertise in project planning, consortium development, design facilitation and design research. We excel at translating complex issues into accessible, emotional, and culturally resonant narratives.

We offer unique experience in co-creating with artists, designers, and communities, as well as producing high-impact activities, exhibitions, and public engagement programmes with diverse partners.

Our strengths lie in creative direction, interdisciplinary collaboration and designing participatory processes that inspire action.

We can contribute strong conceptual vision, artistic networks across Ireland and Europe, and proven methods for engaging diverse audiences around climate justice.
